Micro/nanoencapsulation of active principles and product characterization
Microencapsulation involves a group of specific techniques that allow for the preparation of functional particles, and consists of a support material (encapsulating agent) and an active compound distributed in its core. Microencapsulation technology requires extremely strict control of specific properties of the product, whose action is programmed or controlled.
IPT has been actively engaged in the area of microencapsulation for 15 years and has a multidisciplinary team working, among others, with the food, pharmaceutical, veterinary, agrochemical, cosmetics and personal hygiene segments. In addition to innovation in microencapsulation processes, IPT develops products by conventional means (spray drying, coacervation, solvent emulsification and extraction, ionic gelification, drop solidification and gelification, interfacial polymerization, etc.). IPT also seeks innovation through new encapsulation agents originating from the Brazilian biodiversity.

Creation of micro/nanoencapsulated products
- Development of micro/nanocapsules to meet the client’s specific application needs, by manipulating properties such as average particle size, chemical resistance, thermal stability, shelf-life, organoleptic properties, active principle delivery profile and specificity.
- Small scale production (bench and pilot scale) of microencapsulated products with dimensions varying from 100 nm to 5 mm.
- Development of complex formulations, joining micro/nanoencapsulated components, vehicles and additives (e.g., suspensions and emulsions).
- Adequate selection of the best micro/nanoencapsulation process, based on IPT’s own technological platform, to meet the client’s technical, economic and production needs.
- Adaptation of single operations to industrial implementation of technologies for processing micro/and nanoencapsulated products.
- Use of different analytical techniques for the physicochemical characterization of micro/nanoparticulate products. The properties that can be evaluated are average particle size, morphological aspects, specific surface area, real and apparent density, porosity, fluidity (angle of rest, angle of fall, Carr and Hausner indices), contact angle (wettability), surface energy, crystallinity, thermal properties, humidity and chemical composition.
